Children on Walks

East Dorset Group welcomes children on walks. We would still ask any adult bringing children on a walk to be sure to take responsibility for all aspects of their welfare at all times on the walk.

Group AGM

East Dorset Group’s last AGM was held at the Hamworthy Club, Magna Road, Canford Magna on Tuesday 1st December. A committee was elected including a new Programme Co-ordinator. Members had a chance to air any concerns they might have and we had an interesting talk about landmarks in Dorset.

The next AGM will be held on Tuesday 23rd November at 7.30pm, again at the Hamworthy Club, Magna Road, Canford Magna.

Vacancies

Much of the work to keep your Group running smoothly is done by 2 committees, Area Council, overseeing the 5 Dorset groups and a Group Committee for East Dorset Group. The East Dorset Group Committee now needs a new Newsletter Editor and will need a new Social Secretary very soon.

Newsletter Editor

The person undertaking this role will draw together the walks programme, which is assembled by another committee member, and any articles submitted for inclusion, to create the final programme that goes out to members.

Some computer knowledge is needed to carry out the job but help would be available with this aspect for as long as it is needed. The post-holder will find that the job is quite busy for the few days before the programme deadline three times a year but that there is little else to do for the rest of the time apart from attending 4 committee meetings per year. Please get in touch with us using the contact details below or from your programme if you would like to know more about this vacancy.

Social Secretary

If you think that it is good for members to meet at a pub after a walk, to enjoy a skittles evening or to go for a day's outing, you might be able to take on this role. Please get in touch with us using the contact details below or from your programme if you would like to find out more.

Membership Secretary

The Membership Secretary keeps the records of the membership as supplied by the Ramblers Central Office. He or she can then inform the Group Committee of changes in numbers of members and answer queries from members on their membership. Please get in touch with us using the contact details below or from your programme if you would like to find out more.

Chairman

Our current Chairman will be standing down at the November 2010 AGM. While it is preferable for the Chairman to have experience of the Committee, it is not essential, so please get in touch with us using the contact details below or from your programme if you would like to be considered for this role from November.

Car Sharing Scheme

We have now started a register of people who would like to share fuel costs or who don't have a car at all.

The password protected list of people who wish to offer or share lifts is available here.

How do I obtain the password?

If your name is on the register, you should have been provided with the password already. If you are a member of The Ramblers, East Dorset Group, and are not a car driver and would like to negotiate a lifts with members of the scheme, you can join the register too.

How do I join the scheme?

Please could you provide us with your first name, the first part of your post code, a contact telephone number and an email address if you have one. Then also add your membership number and tell us whether you are a car owner, what lengths of walks you like to do and on which days. We will then add you to the register and provide you with the password. Members need not reveal their surname or address and can simply arrange between themselves to meet at a mutually convenient location for a pick-up.

Meanwhile, if you are looking for car free walks, it might be worth supporting this car free walks web site.

Have you just changed your address or are you about to do so? We do not hold addresses at group level. Instead, your address is held by the central office of the Ramblers and they produce all our address labels. So if you change your address, please could you contact them directly in one of the following ways.

You can write, with your membership number and old and new addresses, to: The Ramblers, 2nd Floor Camelford House, 87-90 Albert Embankment, London SE1 7TW, or email the Ramblers. Alternatively, you can telephone them at 02073 398500 or use this weblink.

Leaders

If you are an East Dorset Group Leader already, or wish to become one, this list of start points might come in handy.

A member of the group has recently (2009) done some research on Dorset car parks, especially those found in the Isle of Purbeck. Here is a copy of his findings.

Walks using public transport

Most of East Dorset Group’s walks are not accessible by public transport. However, some members do not have their own car and others would prefer to use public transport for environmental reasons so the Group is trying to make more walks by public transport available. We now put on a few bus and train walks, which are walks dependent on public transport and where a place for parking cars is not necessarily offered and some bus or train accessible walks, where both a place for parking cars and a suitable bus or train route are mentioned in the programme. The scheme is getting off to a slow start and we need more leaders to put on such walks and more walkers to attend the walks by using public transport. Here are guidelines to walks using public transport for you to download.
